FROM THE (VIRTUAL) BOARDROOM

Steam Train

The board of trustees, with one apology for absence, had its monthly meeting on Saturday 27 March. We used the K&ESR’s Zoom facility.
The e-Newsletter provides an opportunity to give a brief flavour of some of the most important points. It should not in any sense be regarded as a formal record.

Restarting public services

After a most strange year of stop start, we are now just six weeks away from our planned public restart on 22nd May 2021. We have of course to prefix this with “Subject to Government Approval” that Tier 3 goes ahead on schedule. Looking positively, we are on sale, our customers are booking and we are looking forward to a good summer.

Many thanks to everyone who has kindly donated items to the Amazon Wishlist. Unfortunately the packaging and advice notes don’t always identify the sender so it isn’t possible to thank everyone personally, but rest assured that we really do appreciate your generosity!

Fundraising Working Party (FWP)

You will already have read the Chairman's announcement on Friday 2 April of the very good news that K&ESR has been awarded up to £250,700 from the Second Round of the Government’s Culture Recovery Fund; this follows on from the £301,500 awarded in Round 1, all of which has now been spent! Permanent Way - Harvesters Crossing

On 12 March Haystacks crossing was exposed, after Brian Richards trolley inspection highlighted a rather nasty twist fault in the crossing. Five of the current User Worked Crossings (UWCs) have timber sleepers under the crossings.

Bodiam Culvert Works - April 2021

Following reconstruction of the Bodiam culvert on the South side of the line attention has turned to the North side, in particular the connection between the railway's pipework and that of our neighbour where a further blockage has shown up.

Flooding at the Robertsbridge end of Bodiam Station caused by a blocked under line pipe. Image Courtesy of Alan Crotty

The solution is to dig out the old connection which was smaller than the railway's pipe (thus causing a restriction) and replace this with a new 450mm pipe. This should give good service for a long time to come.

Wealden Pullman Kitchen Car Project - Update

‍Arlington Fleet Services have finished the bodywork repairs and repaint of the 'new' kitchen carriage. It will be returning to the K&ESR for signwriting and kitchen fit out. Funding is still required to complete the vehicle, for more information and to donate:

‍Coach RU1987 at Arlington's works Eastleigh, Hampshire. Shame it was raining hard! The coach has been painted in Pullman livery with two pack paint and is almost ready to be returned to Tenterden. The full lining, lettering and application of crests will be done at Tenterden by our own multi talented Meg Gooch.
